In 2009, two good friends came together with an idea and a strong desire to bring comfort to children in crisis. Out of this commiseration, the dream of “The Bag Ladies” came to life. Through the guidance, support and encouragement of many who believed in our mission, The Bag Ladies achieved 501 (c) 3 non-profit status. In 2009, The Bag Ladies began serving Harmony House in Springfield, providing mothers and children with handmade bags filled with comfort items. Our beginning was extremely humble, and fabric often came from irregular clothing purchased at discount stores. However, the provision that allowed this work to grow, increase and continue has amazed all involved. The Bag Ladies have provided bags to many agencies in the Ozarks area including:
Harmony House Rare Breed Youth Center Fair Haven Children’s Home Greene County Division of Family Services The Salvation Army Republic Jordan Valley Health Republic Schools Republic Pregnancy Resource Center The Doula Foundation Life House Crisis Maternity Christian County Family Violence Center
What started out as an idea between two, has grown to become an effort of countless dedicated volunteers and faithful donors. At last count, bags delivered totaled over 6,000, but it has been impossible at this point to keep track of an exact number.
We know and trust all things have a season and a purpose and therefore it is with joy, and not sadness that we announce 2017 as the grand finale of The Bag Ladies. We will affectionately be referring to this time as “The Bag Ladies Farewell Tour”.
You can expect that for the remainder of this year, The Bag Ladies will not only continue meeting the requests of our current partners, but we will also be adding many more deliveries where we have the opportunity to bless kids in need. We will wrap up this final year with our annual large delivery to the Rare Breed Youth Center in December.
As stated above, the provision for this work has been tremendous – due to not only our generous donors, but also because of the compassionate commitment of our volunteers. It has been a top priority to us from the beginning that we act in complete integrity as stewards of this work. With that in mind, we desire to assure all who have supported this work that the decision to dissolve this work in this way is made in part to ensure every donation made to this work is distributed in the way it was intended. Because of this, we will not be requesting or accepting any further donations as we work to make this year the BIGGEST and BEST year yet – thereby, placing every resource we’ve been given to this point into the hands of an area child in need.
Our hearts and lives have been blessed and consumed by this work. We will be forever thankful and full of gratitude for the many ways this work has blessed us. It is certainly more blessed to give than receive, and we have had that rich blessing for eight wonderful years.
Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. Whether you have supported this work through your donation of time and talent, by financial support, giving of needed items, advocacy, encouragement, or prayer, on behalf of the children who have benefitted from your generosity we say thank-you. We roll up our sleeves in anticipation of what this year holds as we strive to finish this year with the unwavering belief in the motto of The Bag Ladies, “…Because Every Child Is Special.”
With our best regards and humble appreciation for your support,
The Bag Ladies
